How to Identify Precious Metals

Hallmarks and Stamps

Hallmarks are official stamps used to indicate the purity and authenticity of precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum. These markings can also provide additional information, including manufacturer details, country of origin, and sometimes production date.

Common hallmark locations include:

  • Rings: inside the band
  • Necklaces and chains: near the clasp
  • Coins: typically on the face or reverse

Purity is often indicated using karat markings (e.g. 9K, 14K, 18K, 22K, 24K) or numeric stamps such as 375, 585, 750, and 999. A magnifying glass may assist in clearly viewing small markings.

Simple Magnet Test

A basic magnet test can sometimes help indicate whether an item contains precious metal. Gold, silver, and platinum are not magnetic. If an item is attracted to a magnet, it is unlikely to be solid precious metal and may instead be a base metal or plated item.

However, this is not a definitive test, as some non-precious metals are also non-magnetic. For this reason, professional testing is always recommended for accurate results.

Understanding Purity

The value of precious metals is largely determined by purity and weight. Higher purity generally results in higher value.

For example:

  • 24K gold is considered pure gold
  • 18K gold contains 75% gold
  • 14K gold contains 58.5% gold
  • 9K gold contains 37.5% gold

In some cases, markings such as “GF” indicate gold-filled items, which contain a measurable layer of gold bonded to a base metal.

If you are unable to identify hallmarks or are uncertain about the composition of your items, Preloved Gold can assist. Our trained professionals use industry-standard testing methods to accurately determine metal content and provide a fair, transparent valuation.
