Antique, Vintage & Estate Jewellery Explained

Understanding the classification of jewellery can help clarify its origin and potential value:

Antique Jewellery
Jewellery that is over 100 years old. These pieces are often highly collectible and may carry historical significance in addition to intrinsic metal value.

Vintage Jewellery
Jewellery typically between 50 and 100 years old, often associated with specific design eras such as Victorian, Georgian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Retro, or Mid-Century styles.

Estate Jewellery
A general term for any previously owned jewellery, regardless of age. Estate pieces may include both antique and vintage items, as well as more modern second-hand jewellery.

Gold-Plated vs Gold-Filled Jewellery

It is important to understand the difference between gold-plated and gold-filled items, as this directly impacts value.

Gold-Plated Jewellery
Gold-plated items contain only a very thin layer of gold applied to a base metal such as copper or silver. This surface layer is minimal and can wear away over time. Due to the extremely low gold content, we do not purchase gold-plated jewellery.

Gold-Filled Jewellery
Gold-filled jewellery contains a much thicker layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base metal. This layer typically represents a measurable portion of the item’s total weight and may be marked accordingly. In some cases, gold-filled items may be considered depending on composition and value.

Common hallmarks on gold-filled items may include:

  • Fractional markings (e.g. 1/20, 1/10, 1/5)
  • Karat stamps (e.g. 10K, 12K, 14K)
  • “GF” indicating Gold Filled

For example, a marking such as “1/20 12K GF” indicates the item contains a 12 karat gold layer representing at least 1/20th of the total weight.
